Don’t pull the plug just yet

In a recent Wired Magazine article, titled “Twitter, Flickr, Facebook Make Blogs Look So 2004,” Paul Boutin starts out with the following…

“Thinking about launching your own blog? Here’s some friendly advice: Don’t. And if you’ve already got one, pull the plug.”

Well, that doesn’t sound very reassuring as I sit here typing a post for Vantage Points. However, if you continue to read Boutin’s article, he makes a point.

That is to say that blogging is not what it used to be (some mere four years ago.) Boutin points to veteran blogger Jason Calacanis, who retired his blog in July and said, “Blogging is simply too big, too impersonal, and lacks the intimacy that drew me to it,” he wrote in his final post.”

So what can we take from all this? Well, I don’t think we are going to relinquish Vantage Points anytime soon. But I think what we can take away from this Wired article is that blogging is not a replacement for concentrating on the personal relationships, the day-to-day phone calls with editors and analysts. Get back to the way things used to be in, what, 2002?

Yes, blogs are important. But so is interpersonal communication. And as more and more individuals and companies are moving further and further into the online world, we need to take a step back and do things the “old-fashioned” way.
